Chewing Capote's Cud

When they subsided, I broached again the factual basis of the story [In Cold Blood], the landscape, the weather, the people. Capote was masterfully evasive and slithered through my questions like a quicksilver snake. Finally, a new and horrified thought in my brain, I asked, "But this is true isn't it, Truman? I mean, this 'nonfiction novel' is nonfiction, isn't it?"

His smile was Cheshire sweet. "Wouldn't you like to know?" he purred.
